Know your units

Adding up your units can be tricky at first, but once you know how many units a drink contains, you can keep track of what you’re consuming. A large glass of wine, for instance, can contain around 3 units. In one evening, that can quickly add up to a lot more than you intended to drink.

What's a unit?

Units are a standard way to indicate the alcohol content of any given drink.

Percentages given in brackets refer to Alcohol by Volume (ABV) of stated drink.

  • Pint of 4% lager: 2.3 units
  • 175ml glass of 13% wine: 2.3 units
  • 25ml glass of 40% single spirit and mixer: 1 unit
