Dentists

The number of NHS dentists available in Dorset is among the highest in the country, allowing residents of the area to benefit from the services dentists provide and prevent ill health from poor dental hygiene.

NHS dentists are safe, clean, local and provide a range of services to prevent issues such as tooth decay and gum disease for their patients. Despite the excellent provision of dentistry locally, enquiries for dental services are still high.
Finding an NHS dentist is easy and can be done in one of three easy ways:

  1. Visit www.nhs.uk to find your nearest NHS dentist and register or use the box at the top of this page to do this
  2. Call Dorset Dental Helpline on: 01202 854443
  3. Urgent dental care out of hours: 0845 7010401

A word from the dentist

Local dentist, Alistair Danby says “There are many NHS dentists in the Dorset who are taking on new patients, but some people perceive it is difficult to find a dentist, or to get an appointment or treatment, which isn’t the case. You can register with a dentist at any time to start benefitting from regular check ups and avoid emergency treatment and poor oral hygiene."

What services can the dentist provide?

All necessary dental treatment, including dentures, is available on the NHS. Your NHS dentist should fulfil the following dental care practices:

  1. Carry out a thorough examination of your mouth, teeth, and gums
  2. Explain your treatment options and tell you about the dental services that are available on the NHS, or privately
  3. Make sure you know how much NHS and private treatment will cost
  4. Provide you with a written treatment plan (including costs) if you are receiving a mix of NHS and private care
  5. Display a poster in the waiting room outlining NHS charges
  6. Discuss with you how often you need to attend for a dental check-up
  7. If you have good oral health, it is unlikely that you will need a check up every six months
  8. Provide information that includes information about the dental practice, and the services available

How much does it cost?

Most courses of treatment cost £17.00* or £47.00*.
The maximum charge for a complex course of treatment is £204*.
* These charges apply from April 1 2011.

You still receive free NHS dental treatment if you meet the exemption criteria.
