Are you looking after a family member or friend?

If the person you look after could not manage without your help due to an illness, physical or mental health condition, addiction or disability then you are a carer.

Caring can be rewarding but it can also be stressful. You and the person that you care for may be entitled to a range of services and support to help you manage at home.

Help from your GP

  • each practice has a lead worker for carers
  • tell you GP that you are looking after someone
  • ask to be placed on the Carers Register in your practice so that you can be given information and advice
  • your practice will try to help you if your caring responsibilities mean that you have difficulties attending appointments
  • caring may affect your own health and treatment therefore your GP needs to know your situation

Social care

You and the person that you care for may be entitled to a social care assessment. This assessment is free.  It is a discussion between you and a social care professional and does not look at your ability to care. The meeting focuses on how you can be helped:

  • will give you advice and information about help and services available
  • will tell you if you are entitled to free services and advise you of any costs
  • may help you and the person you care for get practical help, respite care, day services, sitting, equipment or funding for activities and care
